DEPARTURE POINTS: A WRITING RETREAT

JOIN US IN GIRONA, SPAIN

JUNE 1-8, 2024

We are currently full for 2024; contact us to be added to our waiting list

Inspired by our experiences as writers, educators, travelers and Bay Area Writing Project Teacher Consultants, we have designed a seven-day retreat of writing activities, guided feedback and curated tours of historical and cultural places in and around Girona, a stunning medieval city in northeast Spain. Whether you’re starting out as a writer or have several pieces to polish, the workshop will help you broaden your repertoire and fine-tune your writing in a community of supportive partners.

Join us for a week of writing, exploration, and discovery in the heart of Catalonia!

Who We Are

HappyHeadShot copy.pngGreta Vollmer

I currently divide my time between Berkeley and Girona, where I write and study Catalan. In addition to being a retired professor of Applied Linguistics/English, I have coached writers and directed Writing Project Institutes for a number of years, serving as the Bay Area Writing Project’s Director from 2012-2015. I am passionate about in-depth travel adventures and language learning, and look forward to sharing my knowledge of and enthusiasm for Catalonia with you.

I have been a teacher trainer and writer for many years, having worked with students and teachers on issues of literacy, pedagogy and writing in the U.S. and overseas. I facilitate a monthly virtual writing group born out of the 2019 Girona Writing Retreat and continue to participate in events sponsored by the Bay Area Writing Project at UC Berkeley. My memoir of teaching in West Africa, Tales of Togo, was published in 2020. I believe deeply in the power of writing for each of us and look forward to this week in Girona all year long!
